We support the decisions you make and we are here to help you receive professional medical care in a warm and caring environment.
What to expect for your surgical abortion appointment?
You will be seen by a counsellor where you will be able to discuss any concerns you may have in regards to the procedure, choices, and birth control options. You will have a finger prick blood test done for the Rh factor.
If you are clear that termination is your best choice, you will be taken to the pre-operative area where you will get ready and change into an examination gown.
A registered nurse will take you to the procedure room where you will lie on an examining table, just as you would for a routine pelvic exam (pap smear).
An ultrasound will be performed for dating purposes.
You will not be put asleep for the procedure. Conscious sedation medication (painkillers) and local anesthesia will be used to help you relax and minimize the discomfort.
A supportive registered nurse will be with you during the entire process. Most women are able to carry a conversation during the procedure.
The doctor will complete a manual pelvic examination and insert an instrument (speculum) into your vagina to hold the vaginal walls apart.
The doctor will numb the opening to the uterus (cervix) with a local anaesthetic before gradually widening (dilating) the cervix.
When the opening of the uterus is about as big around as a drinking straw, the doctor inserts a small tube attached to an aspirator machine (similar to the one dentists use to clear the mouth of saliva). The machine’s suction will empty the contents of the uterus through the tube.
The entire procedure usually takes about 3-8 minutes and is usually followed by some vaginal bleeding. Some women experience pain, especially menstrual-type cramping, during the procedure and up to an hour afterwards.
When the surgical abortion is completed, you should expect to rest in our recovery area for about 30-45 minutes. During this time, a registered nurse will monitor your blood pressure, heart rate, bleeding and discomfort.
She will offer you snacks and refreshments.
She will make sure you are not having abnormal bleeding or discomfort.
Painkillers are available for the cramps.
Once you meet our discharge criteria, you will be sent home with a prescription and all necessary reading material on how to care for yourself after the procedure.
