Medical Abortion Information

Summary:

Medical Abortions, also known as the Abortion Pill or Mifegymiso, have been approved in Canada since 2015 and have been safely used in Europe since 1988.

This method allows for the termination of early pregnancies up to 63 days without surgery or sedation.

Mifepristone, the first medication, blocks the hormone progesterone needed for early pregnancy, causing it to stop growing and detach from the uterine wall. Two days later, Misoprostol, another medication, is taken to ensure the expulsion of the gestational sac.

About 95% of women only require one appointment at the clinic, and a follow-up blood test is done at a local lab to confirm the success of the abortion.

The Abortion Pill can only be obtained from trained doctors in abortion care, not online or through pharmacies.

The process involves taking Mifepristone on the first day, followed by Misoprostol at home 24-48 hours later. The uterus contracts and naturally evacuates the pregnancy.

A follow-up blood test is done to confirm the effectiveness of the pill.

The Abortion Pill is up to 95-98% effective. If it fails, a Dilation and Curettage (D&C) procedure will be necessary to remove the pregnancy.
