BWC Appointment What to Expect (Medical)

We support the decisions you make and we are here to help you receive professional medical care in a warm and caring environment.

What to expect for your medical abortion appointment?

You will be seen by a nurse for counselling where you will be able to discuss any concerns you may have in regards to the process, choices, and birth control options.

You will have blood work taken during this time, which we will send to the lab for a measure of your pregnancy hormone (BHCG), in addition to a test to evaluate your Rh factor and hemoglobin levels will be done.

If you are clear that the medical abortion is your best choice, you will be taken to the pre-operative area where you will get ready and change into an examination gown.

You will meet with another nurse that will take you to the procedure room where you will lie on an examining table, just as you would for a routine pelvic exam (pap smear).

An internal ultrasound (transvaginal) will be performed by the nurse for dating purposes to ensure you meet the less than 9-week criteria to safely proceed with the medical abortion.

Once the ultrasound has been completed, you will meet with the doctor who will complete a manual pelvic examination and perform a vaginal swab with the use of a cotton-tipped applicator to test for sexually transmitted infections (chlamydia and gonorrhea).

Once this examination is completed, the doctor will further review the medical abortion process with you to ensure you have a good understanding and that all your questions and concerns are met.

You will then be provided with the necessary take-home instructions and a requisition to complete your second blood test at your nearest Life Labs or Dynacare.

Once you have received all of this, you will be sent to pick up your medication at the pharmacy (Pharmasave) located on the main floor of our building with the use of your health card.

Once you have completed your second blood test at your nearest lab these results will be sent to our clinic, where a doctor will review your results to ensure the medical abortion was successful based on an appropriate decrease in your pregnancy hormones.

At this time, you will be contacted by a nurse at the clinic to discuss your test results and experience with the medical abortion.

Although the medical abortion is 97% effective in termination, there is a small chance that during this time the nurse in collaboration with the doctor may ask that you return for a check-up and/or possible D&C procedure
